Summary
The Underwriting Assistant is an integral member of the Underwriting Team. The UA contributes to the success of the underwriting team by providing support for the Underwriting Department and partnering with various team members to drive sustainable growth, improve profitability, retain accounts and service brokers.
This position primarily supports Professional Liability in Healthcare Services. Once the primary skills are mastered, the team member is cross-trained in several other supporting programs, allowing for growth in their skills and knowledge. This position works closely with our diverse, engaged, skilled support team.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide timely, efficient, and accurate support to Underwriting with respect to issuing policies; statistical coding; other miscellaneous back-end processes for new, renewal, and endorsement transactions; and miscellaneous clerical responsibilities for office or department
- Create policy documents which represent the insurance transaction bound by the underwriter
- Ensure the statistical coding and policy issuance complies with regulatory requirements for each insurance transaction
- Maintain electronic and/or physical underwriting file
- Solicit renewal transactions
- Provide operational support for the product line’s underwriters
- Work with the unit underwriters to bind, book, and issue policies, process endorsements and to maintain Broker relationships
- Review policies for accuracy and regulatory standards
- Input policy and underwriting data in appropriate systems
- Handle credentialing requests
- Make direct contact with brokers and their assistants including participating in meetings and visits as required
- Meet deadlines set forth by management and/or underwriters within the team
- Adhere to company guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Other support tasks as assigned by manager
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Prior Allied Healthcare experience is a plus.
- Applied knowledge of underwriting fundamentals and standard industry practices
- Understanding of basic financial principles and processes

- Ability to work independently, exercising critical thinking skills relative to the directed work assignment
- Ability to interact with a wide variety of people daily, in person, via telephone and email

Qualifications, Education and Experience
- Previous experience as an Underwriting Assistant / Assistant Underwriter is required.
- Previous experience with Professional Liability coverage is required.
- Experience with Healthcare Professional Liability is highly preferred.
- Must be able to function effectively in high volume environment

Compensation & Benefits
The applicable base salary for this opportunity is $65,000 - $75,000. The base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. In addition to the base salary, this opportunity may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
