Position Overview 

Tyson & Mendes, a leading national insurance defense firm, is seeking a Senior Counsel, Legal Operations, to join our leadership team. This pivotal director level role is responsible for providing analysis, oversight and leadership in all aspects of billing dispute resolution and payment recovery from insurance carriers. The Senior Counsel, Legal Operations will participate in high-level analysis, negotiations, and cross-departmental initiatives, serving as the primary firm’s liaison between accounting, firm leadership, and senior representatives of the firm’s clients and insurance carriers. The position function is to protect and advance the firm’s financial interests while maintaining critical, long-term business relationships. 

Responsibilities 

• Conduct and lead analysis of law firm billing data to identify and address complex payment delays and discrepancies, including:
  • Rate disputes or adjustments
  • Stale or aging invoices
  • Incorrect rates assigned post-tender acceptance
  • Unapproved or unrecognized timekeepers
  • Other carrier-side issues impacting timely payment
• Function as the primary strategic liaison between the firm’s accounting team, firm leadership, and senior insurance carrier representatives to resolve high-stakes payment disputes and drive resolutions at the executive level.
• Provide senior-level guidance and coordinate with attorneys, billing staff, and firm leadership to develop effective strategies and support resolution efforts.
• Lead high-level negotiations with carriers to secure payment while cultivating and preserving critical, long-term business relationships.
• Oversee the preparation and review of comprehensive documentation regarding disputes, resolutions, and payment trends, using insights to inform firm-wide process improvements.
• Champion and lead cross-departmental initiatives to establish and implement best practices for billing accuracy and carrier compliance.
• Provide authoritative oversight of carrier guidelines and vendor management systems to ensure the firm remains proactive and fully informed regarding evolving payment practices and requirements. 

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
• Juris Doctor (JD) strongly preferred but not required.
• Minimum of 8 years’ leadership experience working directly with insurance carrier vendor payment and accounting practices, preferably in a law firm or legal services environment.
• In-depth knowledge of insurance defense billing protocols, carrier rate structures, and vendor management systems.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on resolution and efficiency.
• Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills with the ability to manage sensitive carrier relationships.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficient in legal billing software (ProLaw and 3E preferred), document management software (Worldox and Litify preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
