As the nation’s oldest and largest animal welfare organization, the ASPCA’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals. The ASPCA Philanthropy Team is looking to fill a new position that will play a critical role in securing the resources necessary to achieve this mission.  

 

What You’ll Do 

 

The Manager, Philanthropy is responsible for the stewardship of important donor relationships for the ASPCA. This position communicates with a growth portfolio of donors giving at a level of $5,000+ annually. The Manager conducts outreach to new major gift donors and prospects, including calls and correspondence, to determine their interest in the ASPCA and ensure they receive updates on the impact of their support. In addition, the Manager writes, organizes, and prepares stewardship communications sent to all Philanthropy donors. To be effective in this position, the Manager must be an excellent communicator and demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary to meaningfully engage supporters in the ASPCA’s work.   

 

Where and When You’ll Work 

 

  • Remote – New York or Los Angeles preferred but not   

  • Standard business hours, generally flexible. 

  • Occasional evening/weekend work may be needed around events or donor engagements but not frequent 

  • Travel to ASPCA sites for donor events and/or department gatherings may be required up to three times per year.

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary ranges for this role are set forth below and may be modified in the future. 

 

Zone 1: $67,000-$71,000 

Zone 2: $74,000-$79,000 

Zone 3: $81,000-$86,000

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities 

 

Donor Stewardship (50%) 

  • Engage with ASPCA Philanthropy donors and prospects through phone and written communication to express gratitude, explore their interest in animal welfare, and encourage continued involvement  

  • Manage email/mail communication plans for approximately 150 donors ensure delivery of consistent updates and annual appeals  

  • Effectively articulate the ASPCA’s mission and priorities, aligning donor interests with relevant programs and initiatives  

  • Collaborate with the Senior Analyst, Prospect Research to review potential prospects, further research leads, and develop outreach plans  

  • Identify and recommend high-potential prospects for enhanced cultivation and engagement to the Directors of Philanthropy  

  • Maintain accurate and current records of all donor interactions and activities in portfolio files and Salesforce  

  • Proactively anticipate donor needs to strengthen relationships, deepen engagement, and increase philanthropic support  

   

Donor Communications (50%) 

  • Develop high-quality, compelling donor stewardship materials for the Philanthropy Team in both email and print formats, including quarterly newsletters, timely updates, donor surveys, invitations, and more  

  • Maintain and refine a multi-touchpoint communications plan, ensuring messages are timely, consistent, engaging, and aligned with donor interests. 

  • Utilize a range of software tools (Canva, InDesign, PhotoShop, PowerPoint) to produce engaging content that features strong narrative writing, infographics, and visuals; coordinate with freelance graphic designers as needed to ensure high production standards  

  • Manage all departmental donor mailings in collaboration with the department’s mail house vendor  

  • Create and execute all mass email communications for the department using an email marketing system  

  • Collaborate with various internal teams to gather, curate, and organize compelling content, including statistics, program details, and stories  

  • Develop and maintain a story and content library for use by the team  

  • Oversee the department’s acknowledgement letter process  

  • Lead the planning, development, and production of mid-year and year-end impact reports for Philanthropy donors  

  • Stay informed and up to date on ASPCA’s national programs and initiatives to support accurate and compelling donor communications  

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental goals and donor engagement strategies

Education and Work Experience  

 

Education:   

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience 

 

Experience:  

 

  • Three years of professional experience, preferably in fundraising or client services  

  • Previous experience in a nonprofit environment preferred   

  • Experience working with a CRM platform (Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge)  

  • Experience with – or the ability to quickly learn – tools such as Canva, InDesign, Airtable, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe products  

  • Experience engaging donors required; experience engaging Major Gift donors strongly preferred  

  • Experience developing communication plans for donors is strongly preferred; experience overseeing mass emailing strategies is a plus  

  • Experience analyzing data to identify trends and drive strategy ; experience analyzing donor data and communicating impact  

 

Skills:

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and remain positive and adaptable under pressure
