Position and Salary
 
The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 1 in the Torts Division. This position is located in Seattle, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
 
Legal Assistant 1 (Range 42) salary range: $45,024 - $60,132 (Effective 7/1/2025)
The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.


The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:

  • Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend.  
  • Legal Assistant 1 incumbents assigned to our Seattle office receive an additional 10% Assignment Pay.

About the Torts Division

The Torts Division defends tort claims and lawsuits against all state agencies, officers and employees.  The majority of cases are based on actions brought under theories of liability for state actions such as highway design, release of inmates, injuries on state property, medical malpractice, employment, childcare and custody, auto accidents, maritime injuries, false arrests and unreasonable force.   With such a diverse practice our paralegals are continuously engaged in challenging and interesting work.  Opportunities to learn and achieve professional growth through experience, mentorship and training are encouraged and supported.

Duties and Essential Functions of a Legal Assistant 1:
 

Under close supervision, this level performs routine legal support functions such as: preparing routine legal pleadings and/or forms; performing data entry and navigating legal databases in order to meet legal deadlines; creating and maintaining legal files; reviewing and identifying relevant information for docketing; coordinating, scheduling and calendaring hearings, conferences, depositions and meetings.

  • Prepares routine legal documents for review;
  • Prepares routine expert witness agreements and stipulations, releases, subpoenas and correspondence for obtaining records;
  • Reviews mail received for attorney; routes, monitors and updates case status in a case management system; calculates calendars and tracks significant events and identifies critical deadlines;
  • Creates and maintains existing case files, in hard copy and electronically; obtains appropriate supporting documentation to assist in the timely preparation and filing of documents;
  • Prepares routine legal documents and pleadings for pre-trial, trial, and post-trial actions in local, state and federal courts;
  • Obtains documents from client agencies, boards or courts to be used for case development;
  • Accepts calls for attorneys and makes tentative appointments for various hearings and meetings;
  • Makes travel arrangements;
  • Schedules conferences, depositions and hearings;
  • Arranges for interpreters and/or court reporters as needed;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of one year of experience in a legal environment; 

Option 2: Two years of legal office experience; 

Option 3: A combination of three years of college education and/or relevant experience; 

Option 4: A two year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study.

Skill & Abilities:

Litigation or experience within the Office of the Attorney General is preferred.
