Lead Designer for Pricing & Genius, Accommodations Business Unit

Summary

The Lead Designer is a critical thinker who has sought-after expertise in the principles, theories, and strategies of product design and in the related areas of creative direction, brand development, content design, visual design, and customer engagement. The Lead Designer will be adept at collaborating with marketing, product, engineering, copywriting, and research management representatives and individual contributors. 

Lead Designers leverage their knowledge and insight to challenge established practices and uncover new business value in existing products and services. They comfortably take on known and anticipated product design challenges and deftly balance design strategy, customer and partner needs, and business goals in order to provide efficient and evocative end-to-end solutions. They inspire with their vision of the future.They love connecting the dots amongst teams and initiatives and display a commitment to design excellence in their work and in their influence on others--ensuring an extraordinary level of quality and cohesion in the work we produce.

Pricing Department

The Pricing team is responsible for pricing, discount, and deal acquisition from our accommodation partners (chains, hotels, boutique hotels, homes, and more) and for publishing compelling offers to new and existing customers. We are also responsible for Booking.com’s loyalty program, Genius. We work with our partners to secure compelling properties and benefits and with our customers to deliver competitive and engaging values which propel loyalty and revenue. The Lead Designer will help us imagine the best way to present a myriad of opportunities and programs to our partners; will help us illustrate the simplest and easiest way to offer personalized and weighted pricing and loyalty programs, added values, and benefits to our customers; and will partner with other teams across the our business unit and marketing to create and implement look and feel programs, engagement initiatives, design systems and components. 

Design Lead Responsibilities

Demonstrates advanced understanding and application of user-centered design concepts, methods, and techniques to enable and advance quality design and outcomes. Lead the creation of design initiatives and contribute hands-on when needed; develop innovative ideas and solutions based on product expertise, design thinking, and customer or partner insight.

Works with design, copy, and research leadership to ensure product, craft, quality, and accessibility standards and requirements are applied across their tracks, teams, and products.

Identifies potential touch points across Guest, Partner, and Customer services and collaborates with influence and grace with other teams and disciplines.

Leverages deep knowledge of prototyping tools / environments, web or native app interface engines, and leads creation of interfaces, creative briefs, visual design programs where appropriate. Drives vision-setting and roadmap creation for design and product, including assessment of future needs, mapping of current initiatives to roadmaps and talent, incorporation of qualitative and quantitative research, north star initiatives. against it with peers in research and product.

Guides teams in completing complex objectives; Identifies multi-product or complex, interdependent design process problems, then proposes and implements well-researched solutions that have impact across reasonable timelines. Proactively helps others to develop, champion, and refine ideas or initiatives that solve business and/or user needs both inside and outside of their area of direct responsibility. 

Encourages and enables designers to grow their skills and impact in design theory, practice and execution (including workshops, sprints, solution ideation and implementation, experimentation and optimization, visual and product design systems). Holds the bar for quality and cohesion.

Utilizes leadership and negotiation skills to influence senior stakeholders and to provide innovative solutions. Communicates and motivates in an engaging and efficient manner. Contributes to the design community at large: cross-team people and design initiatives, recruiting, department representation. 

Requirements

  • 8+ years’ in larger organisations with software/UX design experience in a senior/leadership role; agency and UI experience, campaign experience a plus; travel and e-commerce experience a plus.
  • An array of design skills and execution experience, from visual design and brand implementation to interaction design and information architecture to loyalty and engagement.
  • Advanced understanding and application of user-centered design concepts, methods, and techniques in service of quality design and outcomes. Leading knowledge of prototyping tools or prototyping environments, web, and native app interface engines. 
  • Commitment to design excellence and exceptional polish and attention to detail. Move deftly from strategy to tactical implementation and bring others along.
  • Ability to challenge established practices and uncover new methods and new business approaches to engagement, loyalty, and revenue.
  • Strong project management. Creates vision, mission, and achievable milestones for bigger, influential design or experience initiatives. Makes recommendations to leadership and stakeholders on what is possible if we use our research, talent, and time wisely.
  • A portfolio which demonstrates previous design experience, breadth and depth of design skills, a case study or two which illustrate challenges, methods, roles, and outcomes.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s a plus.
  • Prefer relocation to Amsterdam.
