Description

San Diego Humane Society is hiring an Associate Director of Philanthropy!

How you’ll impact our mission:

At San Diego Humane Society, we’re united by our mission to Inspire Compassion, providing hope and advancing the welfare of animals and people. Philanthropy is the foundation of our ability to serve our community, and we’re proud to have a strong, engaged donor base and a mature philanthropic program that combines best practices with innovative approaches.

The Associate Director of Philanthropy plays a vital role in this mission by building and managing meaningful relationships with donors and prospects, inspiring generosity, and advancing our philanthropic goals through personalized engagement, solicitation, and stewardship. This frontline fundraising role requires significant focus on individual engagement with donors and prospects – in-person, by phone and through email. You’ll join a stable, collaborative and high performing team in an organization with a deeply rooted culture of philanthropy.

This role delivers service at the gold standard level in alignment with the SDHS Way, to meet the needs of animals and the people who love them by leading with compassion, finding creative solutions, providing personalized care and building connections. If you’re passionate about making an impact in the animal welfare movement, we’d love to talk to you.

What’s in it for you?

At SDHS, we’re proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and commit to being a place where every person – staff, volunteer, and guest – can feel a sense of belonging. We support and invest in employees through conscious delivery of benefits and a workplace environment based on our Core Values.

As an employee you’ll enjoy:

  • Competitive pay and paid time-off (including your Birthday Day Off!)
  • Comprehensive benefits package, training and well-being programs
  • 403(b) retirement plan with 5% match after 1 year
  • Free pet adoptions, pet vaccines and spay/neuter services
  • …and so much more!

What you’ll do:

  • Conduct significant qualification activity among current annual donors through on-campus tours, phone calls, off-site meetings and other opportunities for engagement and qualification. Maintain a high volume of outreach to current annual donors/new major gift prospects via phone and email.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of 100+ prospects, moving them from identification through solicitation to stewardship.
  • Engage prospects to build interest, enthusiasm and generosity for SDHS, including introducing organization leaders to donor relationships and managing leadership involvement.
  • Collaborate with Director of Estate and Gift Planning in identifying, soliciting and stewarding donors with interest/capacity for planned and/or blended gifts.
  • Effectively utilize the donor database system to ensure proper database tracking and coding of gifts within area(s) of responsibility. Utilize donor database to add and extract information about donors and prospects.
  • Be thoroughly knowledgeable about the history, philosophy, programs and services of San Diego Humane Society. Accurately and professionally articulate this information to donors and prospects, aligning it appropriately with the individual’s philanthropic interests and goals.
  • Understand and comply with all SDHS gift-related policies and procedures, and ensure full ethical compliance as defined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

What we’re looking for:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in fundraising, or a combination of related paid experience with transferable skills and fundraising experience, including at least one (1) year of direct, in-person donor engagement.
  • Individual fundraising experience preferred, as well as a candidate who enjoys getting to know donors, inspiring and securing generosity and contributing to a productive organizational culture.
  • Requires a knowledge of fundraising principles and strategies and demonstrated ability to successfully implement such strategies.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.
